Old Fire Station, Bournemouth

So the Slam Dunk Festival is happening tonight just down the M27 Motorway in Southampton, I don’t think though that is an big enough excuse for just around 50 or so people to be in the audience tonight,. The Old Fire Station is one of Bournemouth’s larger music venues, regularly hosting top bands. To be honest it is very disappointing that this show has not been promoted as well it should have been and as well as the bands deserve.

The headline band Glasgow’s Yashin have played the South several times before at the Joiners Arms in Southampton and have packed the place out. Putting the disappointment aside each band did everything the could to give everyone in the audience maximum entertainment.

First on were Bournemouth’s ‘Death Of An Artist’ who are making a few waves of their own in the local area. Their melodic twin guitar sound coupled with varied vocals styles including James sreamo growl and Mark’s more conventional tone, gave the audience some excellent early entertainment. The band’s ‘Clarity Of The Collective’ EP which has recently been reviewed in Rock Sound magazine, show’s 4 solid tracks which also are delivered well live with passion and loads of energy.

‘Dear Superstar’ take everybody by surprise hitting the stage with their powerful brand of no nonsense old school metal making very sure that everyone in the building is sitting up and taking notice of what they are doing. Leader vocalist Micky works hard with all the audience, getting them rocking out to their hard hitting full on sound. The five piece band from Manchester have already supported the likes of Paparoach, Bullet for my Valentine and Buckcherry and looks like these experiences were used to perfect their craft. with songs such as ‘Anthem To My Life’ and ‘You Glitter Just Like Gold’ impressing everyone present.

Yashin did not let their disappointment at the size of tonight’s audience show, in fact they took full advantage of the small audience and played to each person individually, performing a carefully crafted set that gave equal amounts of energy and excitement. The two vocalists Harry and Kevin bound around the stage at a frantic pace delivering top class vocal harmonies backed by some excellent guitar work especially on songs such as ‘The First Rule Of Fight Club’ and ‘Let Loose’. The set ended with both vocalists clambering over the barrier into the audience to perform a version of Britney Spear’s ‘Everyday’ which included some extra vocals from much of the audience as the microphone was passed around. All in all a great night with all things considered……….Bournemouth where were you? You missed out on a top class night!!!
