Drift Micro Bar, Poole
Two of the area’s most promising singer/songwriters have recently joined forces to go on a Lifeboat Promotions backed tour of a host of venues around the UK including dates in Bournemouth, Salisbury, Basingstoke, Brighton and tonight to the Drift Micro Bar situated on Poole Quay. Jonny Phillips and Matt Underdown met while performing around the area’s bustling music scene and forged a friendship after finding they both have much in common.
The Drift Micro Bar as the name suggests is no larger than the average lounge and there is always a warm welcome from landlord Alex, who offers a wide variety of real ales. There is always something going on with quiz nights, sports events on the large screen TV and of course plenty of live music. After the England rugby teams convincing win to clinch the six nations, the bar is in very high spirits and Matt starts at around 10pm.
His powerful voice and acoustic guitar soon sets a slightly gentler mood in the place with the vast majority of people and two dogs settling down to listen to his set. He delivers a varied set which includes many self-written original tunes which feature some sensitive personal subjects which are delivered from the heart. The audience are also treated to some reworked covers which include Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” and a crowd-pleasing version of Christine Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle”, which sees the majority of audience joining in on the infectious chorus. After a great 45 minute set Matt bids farewell to the well entertained receptive crowd.
The self-confessed “Rainbow Hippy” Jonny Phillips is a busy fellow these days performing with Krista Green and The Bees and in his own band “Bamboo City” (Formerly Willowen), as well as playing loads of solo shows. Jonny is a much-loved character on the local music scene and is a welcome addition to any live music event. He effortlessly entertains with a string of lively original tracks including tunes from his debut Ep “Sipping at the Sun”. Jonny calmly handles the hecklers requests for all manner of different covers while keeping the audience more than satisfied with a fantastic rendition of Men at Work’s “Down Under”. The set is brought to a close just before midnight with a lovely version of the Willowen song “Things”. A great evening in a small and friendly bar with some fantastic local talent.
