The Acorn, Creekmoor
The power of a community when acting as a team is so undeniably fantastic and there are benefits for everyone involved. On a Sunday when most people are indulging their biggest meal of the week or playing/watching sports, the Acorn in Creekmoor have given everyone a reason to leave these such activities. A “musical charity family funday”; in aid of the very worthy “Wings for Warriors” charity, helping injured servicemen have a future worth fighting for. The organisers have brought together some of the finest local musicians and entertainers, along with various fun activities for children too. There is face painting, a raffle, colouring and “Master of the Ballooniverse” the dazzling Kevin Hart, who can make virtually anything out of balloons.
After his second performance on BBC TV’s “The Voice” last night; local hero Si Genaro is here in the flesh, much to the delight of everybody in the place. The young children in the audience are all saying to their parents “Is that him off the Telly”….. The multi-talented entertainer does not disappoint with a set that includes the deeply emotional new single “When the Last Bird Flies” as well as a great ‘full band’ version of Men at Work’s “Down Under”. As usual Mr Genaro is very talkative and makes sure everybody is aware of the re-run of the said TV programme on BBC 3 this very evening. The very popular artist completes a delightful one hour set before dashing off to his weekly Open Mic night at Le Bateau in Ashley Cross.
The anchors of the event are Father/Son team Matt Black and Chris Payn who do a fantastic job keeping all the artists on track and the sound just right. They also put in various performances throughout the day on their own and duetting with others. Matt Black plays an amazing comedy parody of “War Of The Worlds” opening title “The Eve Of The War”, as well as a few near the knuckle others that have the crowd crying tears of laughter into their drinks. Chris Payn impresses everyone with a brilliant piano version of his own composition “The World is Still Mine” and a couple of numbers duetting with “Jak the Lad” frontman Paul Moss. Chris also showed off his superb musicals skills with an excellent version of Guns n’ Roses classic “November Rain”.

The evening came to a close with Isle of Wight band Duveaux who are over on the mainland for a series of gigs in the Bournemouth/Poole area to promote the new EP “The Dangerous Gentlemen”. The five-piece with their twin effect-laden guitars create a really unique sound. There is a somewhat mischievous darkness to their sound which shows itself in songs like ìDevil in a Marionette” and “Gutter Rats”. Frontman Dan is more than comfortable in front of an audience with his Jarvis Cocker-style qualities; along with sinister, knowing side-glances. A highlight is a great song called “There Goes My Dreams (Again)” which gives the audience a chance for a chorus sing-a-long. After an hour on stage the band give their thanks and bid farewell to the very appreciative crowd.
The whole day has been a complete success and all involved can be proud that they have generated some amazing goodwill and raised plenty of much needed funds for the charity………………congratulations to all!!
