The Lord Nelson, Poole
It’s a fairly chilly night in Poole, as well as a quiet one. There aren’t many people about; not surprising considering it’s the Sunday before “Blue Monday”, allegedly the most depressing day of the year.
The Lord Nelson, however is warm and welcoming, although not very busy. There are two bands on, the first of which is a local Bournemouth 4 piece rock band called “Overath”, a band I hadn’t heard of previously. They have a female vocalist who has a somewhat distinctive style and the music has a distinctive dark feel to it. They do draw applause from the sparse crowd, and although it’s not my cup of tea, I am always appreciative of a group of musicians who actually gets up on a stage and plays with their own distinctive style.
The pub gradually starts to fill up as the bands change over and Between The Void take to the stage. I had high hopes for them as I found them and their music on twitter some months ago, so I was keen to see what they could do live. The band consists of three guys and a female bassist, which is fabulous to see. They kick off with “Recover”, a track full of promise of what is to come. The pub starts to fill up as they go through their set, through the memorable “Silence of Alex Marshall” into the mad-riff laden, drum heavy “Relax” – easily my personal favourite.
They slow things down a bit with a more mellow track “Based on Real Life Events” before going straight into “Instrumental”, which does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s a track with no lyrics, but still a blinder. They wrap their set up with “Innuendo”, another stand-out track for me. I actually didn’t want them to stop playing and was a bit disappointed that their set was only eight songs long, but I’ve seen famous bands play fewer songs in a far less competent manner, so I can’t really complain.
I really like this band, the crowd also seemed appreciative and it seems bizarre that more people haven’t heard of them, although they were only formed last year. I am also disappointed that they don’t appear to be doing any more gigs until a little later in the year, because I really want to see them again. As I may have mentioned before, I’m a bit picky about my music but Between The Void are definitely a band I would go and see again and preferably sooner rather than later. I suggest you catch them if you can.
