Hailing from Saskatoon, Canadian shoegazers Dumb Angel have released a single from the recently released LP Broken Glass. “Like a Wave, Like a Tide” begins with a simple chiming guitar before the Mark Gardiner-esque vocals kick in, reminding me of Ride at their dreamiest. It sounds like a song of longing to return to where one is most at home, notably in the accompanying video. Simple drum tapping matches the heartfelt and honest vocalising. Picture dreamy summer evenings in your most romantic idyll.
There’s nothing new here that you won’t have heard before, but the song evokes memories for listeners still basking in the late 80’s/early 90’s Shoegaze heyday. The video is simply beautiful, as is the song. Those chiming chords are the prominent feature while at 6.5 minutes some might argue its overlong, but that would be missing the point. If this is just a snippet of what ‘Broken Glass’ sounds like then the future looks bright for Dumb Angel.
