In this; only their third year, Dorset-based band Ruby & the Roughcuts have already made an impact both locally and further afield. Their live performances, on a host of stages, have earnt them many regular gigs at many events across the region. The original founding members Ruby (vox) and Callum (lead guitar) started the band in 2013; mainly performing rockabilly and rock ‘n roll covers and over time have introduced their own blend of original material, bringing it into the 21st century. Inspiration has come from various sources, the 1950’s vibe, Rockabilly, Hillbilly, Rock ní Roll, Country, Garage, Surf and Psychobilly. The original material now makes up a good 50% of the setlist which is growing all the time. The band’s sound is evolving constantly and this month they release their debut EP “Roughcut Man”, featuring five original songs written by guitarist Callum and Ruby.
The EP opens with the title track “Roughcut Man”, a song which with its infectious chorus and constant “train-track rhythm” has been a hit with audiences during the band’s live shows. The song combines 50’s style guitars with a saxophone to great effect. There is a definite, more than welcome June Carter and Johnny Cash, vibe going on here. “Sex Wax” is a beautifully created piece of 50’s surf rock with Callum’s guitar giving the whole thing a really authentic feel, making it hard to believe it’s a tune crafted in this modern age. “Nightmares” is a tune where you can clearly hear Ruby’s sparkling honesty in her vocals. This downbeat sad tale is delivered from the heart and with an inward passion. The uplifting beat returns on “Halo”, a classic number with more of that foot-tapping rhythm and the rest of the great ingredients that the Roughcuts have to offer. The final track “She Wolf” features some excellent psychobilly-style guitars, which sound a little like the original Batman theme tune. A great track all the same with yet another great vocal performance and possibly the best track of this collection.
