Soulhole are a band that since forming in 2012 have created a whole scene around them. Their positive attitude and kindness to their fellow musicians is generating lots of local good feeling. The band’s consistent and sometimes hectic never ending gigging cycle have up until now prevented them from putting out the debut album that they so wanted to release.
This month “Abazar” is finally unleashed with much anticipation to their ever growing army of loyal fans. The album features 9 songs all which have been a regular part of the band’s live set for some time now. Soulhole on initial listens will remind you of a sort of funky “Madness”. The band’s fun and sometimes carefree attitude along with zany catchy lyrics reels in the listener right from the start. The songs easily lend themselves to further madcap videos like the one they have already produced for “Shock! Shock!” (See Below) recorded at one their favourite live music venues in Boscombe Chaplin’s.
I can honestly say the band have created a really original sound using large amounts of funk mixed with blues along with a large chunk of expertly played electronic keyboards. The influences come from all over the place with music from the 60’s, 70’s , 80’s, 90’s and OO’s featured within the bands songs. The album is really well produced with the help of local lad Ben Jones from Sunstone Collective. The band have seemingly worked really hard to produce something that they all can be really proud of.
There are many highlights throughout the album from the rip roaring “What Happened To Stephanie” to the Doors-esque keyboards in “Bag Of Fun” and of course the news reporter in “Cycle Sue” The last track on some albums in some cases get neglected but I would urge you to listen to “Ancient Scrolls”. This is an epic masterpiece that is set up with a big intro, along with an impressive vocal performance from Jordan with some equally impressive harmonies from Kaia Vieria. Soulhole have really nailed it here, a debut album that really does have something for everyone and if the right people get to here it who knows what could happen. If “Abazar” is a magic word, it certainly has done the trick!!
