Hailing from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, five-piece indie rockers, Callow Saints have been in existence for nearly five years. This is their third EP, following last year’s “Twisted Hazel” and the 2015 debut ‘Live and Wired’. Featuring four tracks, “Unhinged” showcases the band’s easy style and vocalist Ruby has a fine voice indeed.
First track, “I Should Run” starts off with some pretty mellow guitar and an easy, laconic vocal style. The chorus segues into a pacier, upbeat gallop of a song and it’s pretty catchy – it was stuck in my head for hours after I had listened to it several times.
Second track “E.M.M.A” is the latest video release; it moves along at a brisk pace and features some big, echoing guitar sounds. I should imagine this is one that will translate well onto a live stage, as I can picture people singing along with it.
Penultimate “Ten” slides along with a vaguely menacing air, featuring a slower pace and some nice guitar effects; it reminded me a little bit of the style of Royal Blood and other bands of that ilk.
Last track, “Kiss Is Bliss” is a bouncy number, with less of a dark vibe and channelling more of a summer festival feel than its predecessor, but again, Ruby’s vocals are strong.
Having smashed a slot at Camden Rocks Festival and also played to a packed out O2 Academy in Oxford, it would be great if this band could get out to a wider audience and play some gigs further afield. With three EP’s under their belts, they certainly have enough material for a decent length set. They’re not really my cup of tea, but I could listen to that lovely voice all day long and I would certainly make the effort to go and see them if they were playing near me.
