Single: “Heathens” by The Mistakes
April 25, 2023
Following on from “A Good Hill To Die On”, the title track and recent single from the forthcoming album; Poole’s finest musical export unleash single number two. Debuted during recent shows to great applause “Heathens” avoids the Melodic/Punk of its predecessor in favour of a more familiar Mistakes sound. The rasping, chugging guitar intro paves the way for Ross’s stellar Punk vocal strain and delivers those familiar chord changes and vocal layering we have become accustomed to over the years.
The accompanying video is more of a personal affair, taking in shots/edits of the band in various venues and landmark points across their hometown. We even get the skateboarding skills of band members for good measure! But getting back to the song, it’s a balls-out belter of a number we have come to expect from this quintet. Dropping the ‘Oi’ influence in favour of a more Punk/Rock’n Roll stance, it has all the hallmarks of classic anthemic Punk at its finest. Ok so the usual influences are there for all to hear, but fans old and new won’t be disappointed.
Fairly ‘new’ bassist ‘Angus Simpson’ has seamlessly filled the shoes of the departing Richie on bass and with the band recently recruited by “Time and Matter” recordings, the trajectory of this band is only taking one direction. Well over 15 years paying their dues the length and breadth of the South Coast (and beyond) has reaped the just reward. Throw in the odd jaunt across the channel this band are ready for anything that comes their way. There are bands who are content to play their local Indie/Alt venue to one man and a dog – and then there’s The Mistakes, make no mistake(sic) – these guys are here for the long-haul…
