CD: “Desert Queen” by Duskwood

Duskwood

Using a healthy mix of stoner rock and 90’s grunge, Duskwood’s first full length album is a real cracker (I know Christmas is coming, but that wasn’t a pun). The boys from Yeovil certainly know how to pen a catchy tune and this opus is probably best listened to with a couple of beers and an eighth.

The first track Obelisk has a real Kyuss edge to it and this is a feeling that permeates the album, most notably on Church Of Misery and album title track Desert Queen. The soaring vocals over heavy riffs on Titan bring to my mind snatches of Alice In Chains’ debut Facelift, which is no bad comparison. The album is an enjoyable romp with thundering bluesy rock stompers like Hazy Eye, rubbing shoulders with riffed out melodic fuzz belters, that wouldnĂt be out of place at John Garcia’s birthday bash.

Duskwood

I gotta say this is a very good debut and I look forward to seeing these lads in a live setting, blasting out these awesome tunes.
