After thirty years of gigging and more than 6,000 shows, Ben Waters has decided to call time on playing live but not before he makes one final appearance at Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, on Saturday 9 February. Dorset’s homegrown boogie-woogie piano maestro is promising to go out with a bang and is lining up a blistering set of his trademark upbeat boogie, blues and good-time rock ‘n roll.
“I will keep gigging until the end of the year, but from 2020 I won’t be doing any more gigs,” says Ben. “I have decided to stop to concentrate on other things. There will be more info soon, but thanks to everyone that has helped and supported me over the years, itís the end of an era for me and now I’m looking forward to new adventures.”
Born in Weymouth, Ben grew up in Upwey and now lives near Owermoigne with wife Ruth and children Tom and Molly – sax player Tom has been a fixture of Ben’s live shows in recent years. Since cutting his teeth at near-legendary live music nights at the Fox at Corscombe in the 1980s, Ben has become one of Britain’s most in-demand piano players and worked alongside the likes of Jools Holland, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Rolling Stones, Sir Ray Davies, Pete Townshend, Paul Weller, Shakiní Stevens and many more.
He was voted piano player of the year at the prestigious Boisdale Music Awards in 2017 and last November was joined onstage by special guests including Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, guitar legend Jeff Beck, singer Imelda May and acting superstar Johnny Depp in a tribute to Chuck Berry at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London.
