Heartbreakers, Southampton
Tonight Zan, Jenny and Timia aka The Lounge Kittens are back in Southampton at Heartbreakers for a homecoming gig to celebrate hitting over 150% on their soon to be released mini-album, which is a follow-up to their popular debut “Sequins & C-Bombs”. The trio has played some of the largest festivals in the UK including Sonisphere, Download, and Isle of Wight. They have also shared stages with some huge bands including Limp Bizkit, Bowling for Soup and Steel Panther. The band has recently been working hard behind the scenes with lots of exciting things forthcoming in 2019. The gig has sold out with their army of loyal fans snapping up all tickets in advance.
As if the headliners weren’t enough there is also the matter of the hand-picked support act, Bournemouth band Plastic Jeezus who take to the stage just after 8pm. The trio are fronted by clever lyricist Simon Fernand, who has a knack of creating some infectious tunes that get right under your skin and also raise a smile in the process. With an eight-string ukulele, bass and drums the band gets feet tapping with a string of delightful tunes that include a cover of The White Stripes “Seven Nation Army”, as well as a host of great originals. These include a “sort of” love song “Puncture Repair Kit”, which is dedicated to Simon’s wife who is in the audience slightly blushing. The Kittens fans seemed to more than appreciate all that the trio had to offer and gave them a great round of applause as they left the stage after a 40-minute set.
The Lounge Kittens take to the stage in all their sequined finery and get an amazing welcome from their dedicated fans, who are all full of excited anticipation. The girls; despite saying they are little jaded after a hectic week, certainly do not disappoint. Their vocal ranges are superb and it seems they can handle virtually anything. With just accompaniment from Jenny’s piano, the audience is treated to a string of great songs which include System of a Down’s hard-hitting ‘Violent Pornography’, as well as a host of beautifully put together medleys. The audience knows the drill and is in fine voice tonight, singing along with The Kittens in a thoroughly uplifting unison.
Their show is like a fully interactive cabaret that works on all levels. It’s not just the music, there is also some seriously hilarious banter with the girls being totally engaging and rigorously honest in-between songs. They say that last year had been incredibly difficult for them and there were situations that could have ended the band; however, they have managed to pull through making them much stronger than before, with a greater will to continue. There is no song that this band will not try from The Prodigy to Rammstein, to Avicci and some great long forgotten 90’s Cartoon themes which keeps the whole audience captivated the entire evening. A fantastic evening in the company of two eclectic bands who both show a desire to be totally different from the rest.
