Greyside

It appears that all good things must come to an end, and in this case rather quicker than I had hoped for. Last November Brandon (Vocals), Joe (Guitar/Vocals), Aidan(Bass) and Sam(Drums) formed “Greyside”, a hotly tipped Indie band. The band recorded their debut “Balloon” EP with Matthew Musial at The Burrow Studios and played some really notable gigs including a support to The Hoosiers at the Old Fire Station. The band then disappointingly put a statement on their Facebook page to say that they are splitting up and forming two different bands. The differences between them could not be resolved; however, they decided to play one last gig together at the place where it all started, as a thank you to their loyal supporters.

Before we have our chance to say a final farewell to Greyside, we have in stark contrast the first gig of a brand new band “Sad Love” who have formed from members of local bands “Coosbay” and “Honeymoons”. The three-piece play in the style of 90’s Shoegaze, coupled with the more modern Dreampop sound. Frontman George Appleton creates a nice pedal-fed sound from his mapleglo Rickenbacker, backed ably by his tight rhythm section. The band are booked to play on the 5 date “We Broke Free” Tour at the end of January with “Leeches”, “Lyra” and “San Marlo”. While what we get tonight is a little way from the finished product, this new band show plenty of positive sparks.

Finally, Greyside take to the stage with loads of positive support from the audience packed with parents, brothers, sisters and genuine well-wishers. The foursome shows no signs of animosity towards each other and seem to be thoroughly enjoying it up on stage. There are plenty of smiles with loads of infectious energy as they belt out top original tunes including “White Lines”, “Tunnel” and the epic sound “Click”. You cannot fail to be impressed with their considerable collective youthful talent. The band finish their set and try to leave the stage, but the crowd are having none of it and demand another song. Greyside obliges with another version of The Cure-influenced “Give Me Everything”, which brilliantly includes a chorus of The Cure’s “Just LIke Heaven”.

The band take their bows and leave us to join two new bands: Brandon & Sam will be in a new 5-piece Marble Tides and Joe & Aidan will be joining “Cherry Lotus”. I’d personally like to wish the guys all the best and look forward to catching up with their new projects sometime in the near future.
