I was introduced to London band “Arrows of Time” at the Talking Heads in Southampton when they supported The Manic Shine recently. The 25-minute introduction of the live show was enough time to tell that these guys make a beautiful noise worth investigating. The band were formed in 2013 by Will Stapleton and Filippo Van Arecco. They, along with a couple of different bassists have enjoyed some minor highlights including supporting 80’s superstars Level 42 at the Indigo O2 in London and an afternoon slot on the “Hey Joe” stage at this year’s Isle of Wight Festival. In December of last year the band released their debut EP “Body Of Water” and previously put out a 5 track live EP “Live @12 Bar Club” as an initial taster of what was to come.
In October of this year, the band released their 2nd EP “Let Go Of It All”, a four track effort that could well be the start of something. The EP opens with ìLet Go”, a precious piece of alternative rock that hits the spot from all angles. It gives you ‘dirty stoner’ style guitar riffs, combined with some stylish heavy drumming and some low down nodding bass. The 2nd track “Get Out” is a very different matter and for some strange reason reminds me of the Stone Roses in places, with Will’s vocals sounding a bit like Ian Brown’s. Things start to get serious with “Humanity” with the chemistry of guitar and drums working well together, creating a great tune. The bridge is something really special that show’s Will guitar skills in their full glory.
They save possibly the best tune until last; “Impossible Glow” is a much faster paced number that shows a slightly more poppy mainstream sound to the band. There is still the great noodling guitar work and the precise drumming from Filippo, showing the band have much more diversity amongst their creation processes. These four songs are only a small part of what this band are all about and with time the Arrows should be pointing in the right direction. The band are busy arranging some future live shows for 2016-if they come to your town go check them out, you certainly won’t be disappointed. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for new announcements.
