Grooves On The Green

11th & 12th July 2015,12-7pm

Grooves on the Green is delighted to announce Mutant Vinyl will be headlining the Sunday bill. In his first local show since 2013, Mutant Vinyl, aka sax maestro Edwin Pope, will be trying new tracks as well as revisiting the tunes such as dancefloor smash Lavender that have brought him to the verge of a massive breakthrough. “I’m super excited,” says Edwin. “It’s always lovely to play in front of hometown friends and family, plus, Grooves seems to have grown massively in recent years. I’m bringing the touring festival show to the Green, so it’s the tightest band I’ve ever had. Plus there’ll be new songs and a few special guest musicians jumping on for some tracks.”

Edwin studied at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts where he met its lead patron Sir Paul McCartney.

“I played him Lavender on the piano and by the second chorus he was singing along with me. It ended up him on piano and me on sax and we wrote a new bridge together. He is honestly the most wonderful man. He was so giving with his time, there was no ego, just the most amazing musical wisdom.î He also worked with Tricky a couple of years ago. ìWe kind of co-wrote a track together in 2013, so I ended up guest singing with him at a show in Manchester. He’s a captivating performer and a real musical originator, so the whole experience was amazing for me to learn from. The show ended up with a 50-person stage invasion, so it’s safe to say it was a success!î Edwin is on a one-man mission to plug the sax-shaped hole he sees in modern music. ìHaving played sax in only jazz and wind band settings, I wanted to put a new spin on it. The sound travels from dub, to funk, to jazz, to trip-hop. I’m very fortunate to have an incredible set of musicians that provides the backbone when onstage. For me, performing live is the greatest thing about Mutant Vinyl.” He’ll top the Main Stage bill on Sunday that also features indie pop classicists Duveaux, Southampton math-pop quartet Signals, Afrobeat indie pop merchants Not Made In China, long standing Bournemouth outfit Fearne and performance folkorists Wikkaman.

The second stage, The Calling, is being programmed by an on-going talent search and will be hosted by Si Genaro, whose second appearance on The Voice this year was marked by will.i.am giving him his email address and insisting they keep in touch. With its own food beer and food festival supported by a host of local producers, Grooves on the Green runs from noon until 7pm each day and early bird tickets will go on sale in May from Le Bateau, opposite the festival site on Ashley Cross Green. As in previous years £1 from every ticket sold will be donated to Diverse Abilities Plus, which helps children and adults in Dorset who live with profound disability. The charity has received more than £9,000 over the last two years from its association with Grooves on the Green. Grooves on the Green runs from 12 noon on Saturday and Sunday 11 and 12 July, with the bar open each day from 12. The bar closes at 7pm when the park will be opened to the public again.
