The Bonsai Pirates are a 5 piece Dorset-based band who have given their ‘rum soaked Pirate Folk’ genre a nice twist offering something a little different. As well as using the usual bass, drums and guitars the band have their very own French rapper. They have a massive sense of fun and their live shows contain lots of dressing up with some infectious pirate sing-a-longs with their audiences.
In December the band released their debut album “All At Sea” which features 12 great tracks, some of which you might recognise from their recent live shows. The songs are well written and feature some really interesting and thought provoking subjects such as the song “Where’s Your Cutlass”, which is all about comparing the pirates from days of old with the current Somalia pirates that we see operating on the high seas today.
The band are very at home in the sunshine at Summer festivals and this year they make a welcome return to the Wonky Donk Festival in Lychett Matravers, where they can be seen whipping up the hopefully sun-soaked crowd with their infectious pirate tunes. Previously in 2013 the band took to the stage dressed as a Parrott, lobster and of course pirate outfits.
All five of the band came along to the Hope Fm studios for an acoustic session and a chat about the new album. There was plenty of very lively conversation taking in subjects including Star Wars, teaching and of course music; where the band explained that frontman Bob’s timing was awful, but is improving day by day. They perform three songs from the album and an exclusive brand new, as yet untitled song live in the studio. The exclusive videos of their performance can be seen below.
