The Winchester, Bournemouth

The Lounge Kittens

We are in Bournemouth tonight to see three lovely ladies that have taken the internet and the 2014 summer festival season by storm. The Lounge Kittens have this year performed at Glastonbury, Boomtown Festival and Sonisphere opening up for none other than Limp Bizkit after Fred Durst saw the fine reworked version of the classic single “Rollin” online. The girls perform everything that you expect them not to, with their material from bands such as Metallica, Slipknot, and even Marilyn Manson on offer at their live shows. It is like an Indie/Rock disco with extra attitude and harmony. Tonight there are two local girls laid on to warm up the audience before the main attraction arrives.

The first of these is another internet sensation Sofi Reed, who has got herself some one million hits on You Tube with her well crafted music and cookery videos. Just see them for yourself here. Sofi arrives on stage with a smile on her face and a really positive fun vibe. Along with her guitarist she swaps between bass and acoustic guitar to proudce some delightful quirky tunes including “Pencil Me In”, “Patterns” and a great new track “These Days”. A cheeky cover of Micheal Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel” was thrown in for good measure to give the audience an early sing-a-long. Sophie and her unamed guitarist leave the stage to warm, well deserved applause from the appreciative Winchester crowd.

Next up we have one of Bournemouth’s finest vocalists Annie Winter, a young lady who has spent her Summer entertaining her ever growing army of fans at some high profile festivals including Festibelly and the prestigious Isle Of Wight festival. Tonight Annie also performs as a duo with her dreadlocked guitarist Harry Stoneham on electric guitar. Annie and her acoustic guitar deliver a thoroughly entertaining set full of original highlights, mainly from her debut album “Zooni”. This as well as a couple of covers including Dolly Partron’s “Jolene”, and a version of “Stand By Me” with a suprising kazoo solo. Annie has a superb, well tuned voice that has excellent range; which gained her plenty of positive support from all onlookers in this venue tonight.

The Lounge Kittens arrive on stage and introduce themselves as “Rock sluts in disguise”. We have the pink haired Zan Kitten, the blue haired Timia, and the red haired Jenny Kitten who kick the evening off with a fine version of the classic “Jump Around”. It is a very simple set-up with just three microphones, and Jenny on Keyboards. The trio power through a set of beautifully rearranged and reworked covers that seem to really impress the excited Bournemouth audience tonight. There are clever arrangements of songs by the Prodigy and various Pop/Punk bands in medleys that just flow together so well. It is obvious from this performance that so much work has gone into their top class performance. They have simply amazing harmonies and though their voices are all very different, they work so well together.

The band have a real onstage presence and take a lot of great engagement with the crowd, making each member of the audience feel part of the performance. The set is not all Rock/Metal, we get a bit of cheese in the form of a tongue-in-cheek “Venga Boys” medley as well as a great version of Katy Perry’s “Firework”.

Tonight the girls have shown that they are something very special and are really on to something quite different that will get fans returning again and again. They have in fact just announced that they are to tour with the mighty Steel Panther and Skindred in March next year. Maybe be we have just witnessed the next big thing here tonight.
