VDUB at The Pub
May 17, 2014Wimborne Football Club
The Wimborne Football Club played host to a spectacular weekend of music and fun at the annual “VDub at The Pub” Festival. The weekend celebrates the whole lifestyle that surrounds Volkswagen vehicles old and new. There are many thousands of hours that go into modifying and preparing such vehicles for the famous “Show and Shine”- with each vehicle owner hoping that their vehicle is presented with the much sought after prize. The festival itself had a whole host of Volkswagen-themed stalls, as well as plenty of fun for all the family including bouncy castles and children’s magicians.
Gemma Varnfield of the Dorset based promotions company Bugalicious PR and her specially selected team had the job of putting the musical line-up together of mainly locals artist to entertain the revellers. There is no doubt in my mind that they did a simply great job as each act brought something different to the festival with something for everyone.
The day opened with the rip roaring “Colt 45”, a local Rock covers act made up of members of popular band “Walk The Night”. The audience were treated to a string of well delivered covers by bands such as the Foo Fighters, Guns n’ Roses and AC/DC.
The whole day was ably hosted by man of the moment Si Genaro, who also put in a few performances of his own along the way.
The day continued with stirling performances by The Syghtseers and Eleven XI, who pulled out a couple of great new songs to the delight of the Vdub audience.
At 5pm The Cramatics took to the stage and Bassist Alex must have had a very hard decision, as it was the same time as the FA Cup kicked off. Wearing his Arsenal shirt with pride, he played on regardless. The Cramatics injected some huge energy with a set of original songs, that gained a great reaction from the ever growing crowd.
A lovely but risky set by Matt Black showed his expertise with writing parodies of other peoples songs. Along with Si Genaro and his son Walk The Night/Colt 45’s Chris Payn on electric guitar, they created a huge amount of laughter with excellent takes on songs by Robbie Williams and Queen; along with a host of really entertaining others.
This turned a little heavier when London Rock band Sondura took to the stage, a rather unusual choice for a family festival but they put in a fine set of original numbers.
The current great hope of the local music scene Saturday Sun took to the stage as the light began to fade. A great lighting rig created a real atmosphere in the marquee, where a huge crowd had gathered to see them perform. The band, despite a few technical issues; pulled out a top draw performance with a collection of fine, well written songs. Front man Alex Hedley’s voice is something really special and tonight’s gig I’m sure will be remembered as one of those “I was there” moments.
The Mother Ukers ended the evening with some ukular fusion to which they are undoubtedly the pioneers. They take other people’s songs and sprinkle a little fairy dust on them and generate something quite unique. There are songs like “Step On ” by Happy Mondays and “Lovecats” by The Cure which get the Mother Ukers treatment. They are veterans of the festival scene and really know what an audience want and get a euphoric reaction, in return ending the day in great style.
