Southsea psychedelic forerunners Kassassin Street have unveiled their newest creation, “The Royal Handkerchief Ballet”. Recorded at the legendary Konk Studios the track features Tristan Ivemy on producer and engineer duties, producer of Frank Turner’s classic “England Keep My Bones” album.
The result is a strikingly original single, its sonic palette owing equal debts to Kula Shaker, Beck and Primal Scream, whilst somehow remaining nowhere near either. This is in part thanks to the standard of musicianship in the band, their individual talents merging to create something fresh and exciting amongst the increasingly stale indie genre.
The uniqueness of Rowan Bastable’s vocals is a key feature on “The Royal Handkerchief Ballet”. Always the glue that binds the band’s diverse musical leanings together, Bastable’s vocal blasts powerfully through the chaos to provide the band with their instantly recognisable sound. Whilst the chorus features the deceptively simple and upbeat “In the morning I won’t leave you / ‘cos I’m your good friend”, make no mistake about this band; this is dark psychedelia in action – a twisted acid trip through the shadowy land of psychedelic indie.
For the video the band have turned to Brighton-based Italian visual artist Nazare Soares, whose vibrant multi-coloured creation is the perfect compliment to the intense music of Kassassin Street.

Kassassin Street are the antidote to unimaginative guitar bands. Disenchanted with the current crop of indie rock, the Southsea based band are carving their own course, creating intense and danceable psychedelia with soaring melodies and infectious grooves. “Capturing Eastern mysticism, psychedelia and a free flowing looseness, this five-piece have an exhilarating vibrancy and energy to their sound.” – Breaking More Waves
New single “The Royal Handkerchief Ballet” bristles with the band’s explosive energy; a 4-minute kaleidoscopic journey underpinned by Rowan Bastable’s unique voice and lyrics. Recorded at the legendary Konk Studios with Tristan Ivemy (Frank Turner/Tubelord) at the production helm, the track is the first of a series of singles expected throughout 2014.
Already championed by likes of BBC Introducing and Eddy Temple-Morris of XFM, the band have now secured a slot at this year’s Isle of Wight Festival. With more gigs and summer festivals still to announce, plus more music to follow, Kassassin Street are set for a very active 2014.
