News: Shebang 2014 Macmillan Benefit
April 6, 2014Chaplin’s Cellar Bar
The fourth Shebang, this time to be held at Chaplins and The Cellar Bar in Boscombe on 12th April. Starts at 3pm and lasts all day and much of the night.
The Shebang is a punk party held almost every year since 2010 in various locations. It is to celebrate the wonderful alternative music scene in Bournemouth that has been my entertainment and friendship group for the past ahem… 30 years or so. It was this group that supported me when my husband Mal, who was a punk himself back in the day, died in 2008.
The Shebang has a punky theme, but is not just punk music. This year we have punk, psychedelic rock, sludge and also a Hawkwind Tribute. Also upstairs in the garden we will have Geeza playing Reggae and Old School Dance on vinyl. Really it is more about getting all our mates together. It is a family event too, we always choose a venue that allows kids at least up to a certain time and the bands appreciate being able to bring their kids. We will have chidrens activities in the garden and face painting. Free entry for kids but they do have a 9pm curfew.
I am not a musician, nor a promoter, so I rely heavily on the help of others with the music side. Most notably Andy Nazer of Self Abuse and C-30s and Dave Bimble of The Sporadics. Also Al from Uncle Pablos has been heavily involved. There really are so many other people I could name who help out and pick me out of the poo when bands ask me questions that I am clueless about. Getting better though, I now know what they mean by a “backline”. Also Mike from Classic Drums is amazing at squeezing the drum kits he kindly lends me into the back of my little Ka.
The first Siobhan’s Shebang was held in the Portman Hotel in 2010. I asked my friends Self Abuse, Godhead, The Zimmer Frames, The Intestines, Gangaloya, Mooncat, Damnation Alley and The Gutter Rats to do a gig. The rules for band bookings are simple. You don’t necessarily need to be my friend, but you do need to be friends with the other bands. This gives the event a party reunion feel. Over the three events we have had Poze, The Sporadics, Sepia Daze and The Jack Ratts. We only ask a fiver on the door and if someone is skint we don’t exclude them. The other two events were at Champions in 2011 and at On The Rocks Bar in 2013.
Over the 3 events we have raised nearly £4K for Macmillan.
We are known for having great raffle prizes and this year we have a family voucher for Camp Bestival up for grabs. We also have music related items donated by Vice Squad and New Model Army who have always supported the event.
Check out the Facebook event page.
