CD: “Comic Book Crush” by Skyway Avenue
September 28, 2013Around the Bournemouth area there is a perfectly formed pop/punk scene of bands who are influenced by their heroes such as Blink 182, New Found Glory and Green Day. These local bands such as Escapefrom’98, 9 Left Behind, Escape December, Sounds Like Adam, and Skyway Avenue can be found playing lots of our local venues thrilling audiences with their infectious music and catchy lyrics.
Skyway Avenue released their debut album “Comic Book Crush” back in April 2013 and sadly it got a bit lost under the Rock Regeneration radar. This has since been rectified and we now have a copy of this gem of an album.
The eleven track album was self funded and home recorded but Mike, Phil, Joe, and Tim can be really proud of what they have created. From the start the songs do exactly what they should. The band wear their hearts on their sleeves and throw themselves full on into a genre that they obviously so dearly love. This collection of songs are all well written with the lyrics easily good enough to stand side by side with some of the professional bands out on the live music circuit today. The vocals are clear, clean and flow well on songs like the opener “She’s The One” and the really infectious “Taking My Chances”. The shining stars of the album are without doubt the very catchy “Loser” and “Plastic Girls” which uses a bit of retro keys to reel you in, then once again grabbing you with an infectious chorus that will stay in your head forever.
The band have not just turned on the tape recorder and proceeded to play the songs live in their bedrooms. The album has been carefully put together with plenty of sound enhancements along with some great sound effects to make the listening journey as enjoyable as possible. The songs are extremely radio friendly and with the right backing these tunes; once they get played on radio, will certainly be enjoyed by everyone who hears them. If all of these songs can be transferred and played on the live stage it’s something that would really be worth seeing. If you don’t buy many albums by local bands as it’s always a gamble; you never know what you’re going to get, put your money in your pocket and buy this one as I promise you won’t be disappointed!!
