Southern Death Crew

Welcome to the Anvil, good beer, good friends and bloody great music. Also the first ever show put on by Southern Doom Crew (find ’em on Facebook) was well underway when I arrived.

Unfortunately I missed the first band The Underground Pilots which was a major bummer, as I really wanted to check them out having recently reviewed their EP (see here).

So, the first band I saw was Hummune. Hailing from down the road (Southampton) they pounded us silly with their heavy duty rock. Massive riffs with pulverising vocals, what’s not to like? Next up were local filth wizards Greenhorn, now a three-piece. They gave a blinding performance, unleashing the killer tune Witches Bridle to devastating effect-even getting local promoter Bear up on stage for vocal duties.

We last saw Spanish stoner rockers Eldorado on a cold day last April, playing on a Wednesday night to a very small crowd. The audience was considerably larger when they took to the stage and showed people what excellent musicians they are. Playing their original material of 70’s inspired rock; they finished the set saying that they were ending with The Beatles “Yesterday” and promptly launched in to “Helterskelter”, showing a sense of humour too. Plymouth based Rocking Rollers Grifter are well liked in Bournemouth and proceeded to show their appreciation by kicking seven shades of shit out of us, musically that is! High octane groove rock ‘n roll played low down and dirty, just the way we like it. Top notch stuff!

Sludge crew Diesel King finished the job Grifter started and laid waste to the crowd by bludgeoning us with riffs heavier than an Elephant fucking a Rhino. Mosh-pits and a stage invasion were all part of the show. The London mob were superb and showed exactly why they are rapidly making a name for themselves. Intensity and a powerful show won them a fair few new fans on the night. The female fronted Alunah slow the proceedings down (in a good way) with their Sabbath tinged Doom from Birmingham. Glacial riffs and outstanding vocals, especially on the brilliant track White Hoarhound, make that the perfect ending to a very messy night.
