Mr Kyps, Poole
It’s the Sunday before the 1st May Bank holiday and people have no excuse for getting along to Mr Kyps for their “Gig For A Quid” night, this regular event showcases two local bands along with emerging bands from further a field with the very reasonable entry fee of just one English pound. Tonight’s event features “The Brompton Mix” from Woking in Surrey along with opening band “Lucky 13” and headliners “Eleven IV” for what promises to be an eclectic night of live music.
Four piece Bournemouth band Lucky 13 take to the stage with a wave of twin guitar power and a solid backed two piece rhythm section getting those who have turned up early reason to move away from the bar to the front of the stage. Their set is made up with a majority of reworked covers including “Dakota” by the “Stereophonics” along with a few possibly too many “Kings Of Leon” numbers including “Sex On Fire” and “Use Somebody” that are all played well with plenty of energy but nothing really new as literally all pub bands play these particular songs to death. The band’s saving grace was their own original songs “Neon Sign”, and the epic “Closer” which demonstrated the band’s skill and obvious talent for creating music. The guitar work particularly on “Closer” was dynamic and ambitious with some highly original sounding bass guitar with some trippy pedal controlled effects, if this is just a taste of what this band are capable of I would love to have seen them drop the covers and play more of it. Lucky 13 leave the stage with plenty of vocal support from their local fans who all seemed to enjoy their 35 minutes on stage.
The Brompton Mix are a four piece British rock ‘n roll band on a mission to take over the world and first they start with the UK. Armed with their manager drumming hero from iconic band “The Jam” Rick Buckler and a set full of well written original songs they confidently take to the Kyps stage after a pleasant day in the Dorset sunshine. Kicking off with “Take it Back” the band do their best to further warm up the initially unresponsive crowd who are determined to stay close to the bar. The ever smiling front man Ben Peppitt introduces every song with the tongue in cheek comment “This one of our favourite songs” and does his best to get the crowd involved. The band’s Brit Pop’esque style tunes begin to generate small but positive responses from around the room, as the band continue with tunes “In The Night” and “The Love Rats”. It is clear that they really have something here, demonstrating a certain close chemistry with the right ingredients. The best tunes are saved until last “Bang Bang” with an the most infectious chorus that you will ever hear and the epic “King Of The City” which has more swagger than Liam Gallagher along with some really spine tingling guitar work that really impresses from lead guitarist Azza Sergent. It will take a lot more hard work to win over audiences like this but when The Brompton Mix mange to do this expect fireworks as I see a real glimmer of something special here the could escalate into something on a much larger scale.
Eleven XI seem to have bought several coach loads of people with them, as when they arrive on stage the place gets much busier with an obvious buzz of anticipation coming from their excited fans. The five piece band features two vocalists Paul Read (formerly of tribute act “Soasis”) and Carly Green, who together create some really unique music taking influences from all corners of the musical world. The band play a set comprising of all self penned original material which keeps the crowd entertained from the 1st to the last song. The band have yet to make any material available as of yet apart from a few impressive demos on their Soundcloud page. The band’s following has been slowly building with recent local gigs at Chaplin’s, Cellar Bar, and at The Beacon Hotel along with a radio interview on Hope FM. There are many stand out songs such as “Broken Wings” which has a very distinctive sound, along with some classic guitar work coupled with duel harmonies that would make the song very radio friendly. “Bruvers & Sisters” gives a very laidback but danceable feel with the backbone of Wally’s reggae bass lines with yet more nice harmonising, a perfect song for a summers day. “Halcyon Days” takes the audience on yet another welcome turn with a song that is takes it’s influence so obviously from the guitar styles of Andy Summer of The Police. It is such a welcome change to have a band that seem to really focus on their song craft rather than overblown performances. The band end on a high with plenty of very positive support and a rumour has it they may well be performing on a much bigger stage at this year’s “Grooves On The Green” and very deservedly so!!
