The Omega Experiment is a modern prog metal band formed by duo Dan Wieten and Ryan Aldridge. Based in Muskegon, Michigan they produce a sound akin to Devin Townsend jamming with Tesseract.
The album is a fantastic slice of progressive goodness; chock full of multi-layered vocal histrionics, hard edged guitars and soaring keyboards. The duo met whilst in rehab for drug addiction and used their music as a form of therapy. With Dan being the driving force behind the music, he also plays all the instruments on the album, bar the keyboards, which are Mattís domain.
This is an album for listening to. I mean really listening to. Not just whacking on in the background while you do the washing up/ fix the car/ do stuff around the house or whatever. This is for sitting down in a comfy chair, beer at your side, headphones on at a decent level, eyes closed and going on a journey into a musical wonderland. It really is that good.
They have a track on this month’s Metal Hammer magazine and are due to start recording a follow up soon, with some live dates before the end of the year. Standout tracks for me are: Stimulus, Furor, Karma and the exquisite Terminus. For fans of: Devin Townsend, Tesseract, Skyharbour and Meshuggah.
