Chaplin’s Cellar Bar, Boscombe

Draw Me Ugly

Last year “Draw Me Ugly” burst unannounced on to the Bournemouth live scene without so much of an introduction, after several gigs it was apparent that we had the start of something special on our hands. Then they disappeared from the local radar, thankfully after a short hiatus due an unforeseen injury to a band member they return tonight to Chaplin’s Cellar bar to a packed Saturday night crowd.

As usual with Chaplin’s the stage times can vary quite allot and at around 10:30pm “Draw Me Ugly” finally make their return to the stage. Kicking off with the familiar “Nairobbery” the bands blend of blues, funk and rock filters around the room making it’s way into people heads making them dance and tap their feet continuously. The band seem really nervous and due to their own stated lack of rehearsal their are a few notable errors on some of the endings of their songs, which I am sure with a bit more practice can be perfected.

They debut some great new songs which show the bands continuing evolving style, front man Ed Gould takes the brave step of playing solo a brand new song called ‘Liar’ which is about things in his day job that really pisses him off, it’s was not easy to do this above the noise of the lively Cellar Bar crowd but the P.A. does it job and the angry lyrics are delivered well amongst the quieting crowd. The bands original material such as “Foil”, “Total Recall” and “Kidnapped “still sound really great with some impressive intricate guitar work from Phil Allen as well as some seriously funky bass lines from Brian “Mambo” Farley. Another new song “Teddy’s Coming” really gets the Saturday night crowd dancing, with it’s highly infectious music and catchy lyrics it’s sure to become a future live favourite. Tonight it was great to see Draw Me Ugly back on the live scene, although the band seemed to suffer from a lack of confidence there were lots of positives to take from the performance, give them time and more rehearsals I’m sure they will be delighting even more audiences all over the region with their very original blend of music styles.
