Colt 45

On the 8th August 2008 Chris, Andy, Rus and Scotty all only in their early teens entered a rehearsal room and performed the Guns ‘n Roses song “Welcome To The Jungle” for the very first time as a band together, this rehearsal spurned not one but two bands the first “Colt 45” a band who performed hundreds of gigs in pubs, clubs and at big outdoor festivals thrilling audiences with rock classics.

The 2nd is “Bad Magic” a unit designed to create original music that will hopefully take the four members on a long musical journey. Bad Magic have already been voted one of the top four bands in Dorset after becoming finalists of the 2012 Dorset Music Awards. Tonight after performing for four and a half years the band want to bravely finish with Colt 45 to concentrate on taking “Bad Magic” further.

Tonight Mr Kyps is packed to the rafters with the band’s family, friends and fans all looking to give Colt 45 a tremendous send off. The evening starts with a projected video of the bands first gig with them performing AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck” in 2008 the screen cleverly lifts to reveal the band who expertly continue to perform the song. The atmosphere generated from the excited audience is one of great celebration and the band just feed off the energy. Front man Chris Payn certainly knows how to whip up a crowd but his talents are not really needed tonight, he also has a fantastic vocal range and delivers fantastic performances with each number. Guitarist Russ Scargell also effortlessly delivers all manor of tricky guitar parts perfectly, a genuinely naturally talented musician who can certainly entertain at any level. Drummer Andy swaps briefly with Chris part way through the set to show versatility in performing a few ‘Green Day’ songs along with a nicely put together mash up of Jesse J’s “Price Tag” and Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds”

The band bring on stage a few friends to help them on their way in the form of local musicians Darren Hodson and John Wines who performs some impressive blues guitar on “Rocky Mountain Way” which is neatly coupled with “Tainted Love”. Also vocalist Carl Heath who adds his very own original style on a reworked version of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer”, while top tambourine player Carl Filer adds some pub style drunken percussion to “Are you Gonna Be My Girl”. The evening ends after a set lasting well over two hours with the band emotionally thanking everyone in the audience for supporting them over the past four and a half years, Chris unbelievably smashes up his red guitar with some style looking like he had wanted to this his whole life. The last song is a very emotionally energetic ‘Paradise City’ with the band putting every last amount of energy into their performance The band’s family are on the Kyps stage to throw all manner of “Bad Magic” merchandise, T-shirts, Stickers, Badges and Keyrings to the delighted audience giving out the message that “Bad Magic” is most definitely the future.
