The Monks Of Mellonwah

Neurogenesis is the latest offering from the four piece known as the “Monks of Mellonwah” who hail from down under, specifically Sydney. With a unique blend of alternative rock this EP is a powerful but easy flowing journey. This is the first I have heard of “The Monks”, and it is great introduction. I have not had chance to listen to their first EP, but this 4 track EP (the EP closes with a 5 track which is radio edit of the title track) is a superb introduction to their work.

It has an almost progressive laid back feel, that flows over you with Will Maher’s vocals taking you across the soundscape. Opening with a delicate guitar sound, a steady back beat Neurogenesis opens and soon crescendos with a power and force that makes the listener pay attention. This flows to the slower, and almost contemplative “Neverending Spirit”, made even more emotive when watching the video.

The Monks Of Mellonwah

There is perhaps a 90’s rock feel to their sound, but there is also a polished feel that shows some careful guitar work, and pervasive rhythms that keep drawing you in. It would be easy to draw comparisions with other bands such as Band Of Skulls, Sugarcult, possibly even The Killers. But there seems to be something a little deeper going on with these guys. Even with those modern comparisions the closing track (excluding the remix) reminded me of a little of Pink Floyd in places with the guitar work.

The EP was released earlier this year and the band have been creating quite a stir, and managed to has seen the band win “Best Indie Rock Act” at the LA Music awards this year, as well as being nominated for Best International Act. With a growing following, and working with some top names in the industry these guys could proof to be one to lok out for!

The Monks Of Mellonwah

I certainly would like to hear more of what they have to offer.

(by the way I don’t know what a Mellonwah is, best I can find is a variation spelling on a Belgian dog breed!)
