Wareham Music Festival, Wareham Quay

Voodoo Vegas

In amongst the backdrop of the beautiful Isle of Purbeck countryside along the banks of the tidal River Frome a band of dedicated music fans have set up the little known Wareham Music Festival. Last year Bournemouth rockers “Voodoo Vegas” were second on the bill and they impressed everyone so much this year they are back as headliners.

Recently the band have been busy preparing their debut album at Rockfield Studio in Wales with producer Pedro Ferreira who has worked with successful acts such as The Darkness, Therapy and Enter Shikari. The band have used the platform of Pledge Music to raise funds to record the album and they have been completely blown away by the generosity of fans who have pledged, so much so that Voodoo Vegas gained over 300% of their target, which is no mean feat in these difficult financial times. This is certainly great for a very hard working band who have travelled all over the country regularly playing shows in places further a field in places such as Andover and Leamington Spa building up a very loyal fan base. The band recently played a showcase gig, performing at the legendary 100 Hundred club in London receiving some very positive praise from reviewers.

Tonight the band have drawn a crowd from all over the country to see them perform here tonight, after a steady stream of quality support acts such a The Jack Ratts, Dave Griffiths, Sansara and Uncle Pablos Magic Potions, 9:30pm arrives. Which is time for the mighty Voodoo Vegas to take to the stage. The band arrive to a very warm welcome from the excited Wareham crowd who from the start are clapping and cheering, giving the band plenty of enthusiastic support. The stage is a flatbed truck which is lit up by a cleverly attached lighting rig, the band adapt well to the stage and lead singer Lawrence Case does a great job in fuelling the crowd’s enthusiasm to the maximum with plenty of encouragement. The band perform some of their classic live favourites such as “Mary Jane” and “So Unkind” which get the crowd singing along at the top of their voices to the choruses. The band’s classic rock sound has developed well over the years, progressing to an original sound that the band can call their own, with their quality guitarists Merylina Hamilton and Nick Brown creating an amazing backdrop to their music with some killer rifts along with some stunning guitar solos.

As well as their own material the band throw in a few covers to mix things up a bit, a cover by American punks “The Offspring” called ‘The Kids Aren’t Alright’ which the band absolutely nail to the delight of the continually excited crowd, also there is a impromptu cover of Alanis Morissette’s “Hand In My Pocket” which seems a little unrehearsed and slightly unpredictable, but the band get thought it well with Lawrence’s vocals making the song his own. There is a touching moment during the show where Lawrence dedicates a song to his Grandfather who has come along to a Voodoo Vegas show for the first time, the proud lead singer gets the crowd to give him a huge welcoming cheer. After over an hour of top quality rocking the band come to their final song and they invite a host of fans up on to the stage to rock out with them, many of the fan’s have had their faces painted up like the members of rock legends “Kiss”. This beautifully shows such a close bond between the band and their fans, with lots of appreciation coming from both sides. The band leave the stage to huge applause and are bought back for one more number to which they let they audience to choose one of their favourite’s that they have already played which turns out to be “King Without A Crown”. Tonight the band put in a huge performance in front of many adoring fans and also I’m sure they made many new fans, with the album release just over the horizon expect to hear much for from them.
