Personally, “Mechanical Hearts” has probably been my most anticipated EP/Album to date, as previous recordings and live shows have dictated that Weymouth based post hardcore five piece; This Fall are headed for big things this year. This dictation was spurred on as the band took their ideas to The Ranch Production House, an established studio tending for the likes of Kids Can’t Fly, and Burn The Fleet in the past. After announcing support slots for titans; InMe, and Funeral For a Friend this year, it was unsurprising that this band were ready to take the necessary step up, as the EP will also be featured and reviewed in Rock Sound magazine on the day of its release date.
“The Escape” opens the long awaited EP in remarkable style. The flawless, soaring vocals of Jamiee Thompson are ever present; to coincide naturally with the bands emphatic, reverb soaked instrumentals. A softer chorus beckons the listeners attention through the lyric “I have been stuck inside my own skin”; a personal lyric which strikes out a strong indication of the passion injected into the bands workings. The EP’s ability to maintain the balance of hard hitting, scream driven riffs and softer grooves is continued in next track ‘All That I Am’, which means that there’s never a predictable moment for the listener, as the rhythm section of Callan Milward and Joe Isaacs provides the tenacity and bulk of the backbone of each track. The intricate workings of guitarists, Tom Hill and Tom Newton enable the fusion of massive power chords and eerie reverb fuelled tones to create a melodic hardcore vibe to tickle the virtues of both the brutal and forgiving elements to their genre. Closing track “Gratitude” seals the deal that this EP is quite frankly, my favourite EP from a local band. The continual fluctuation of sounds produced by this band means that their sound can appeal to even the more cautious of listeners, with stunning song writing and professionalism wrapping this three track effort to a close.
I can firmly say that there isn’t another band on the planet that deserves recognition for their craft more than This Fall. With this band, you are presented with five of the most genuine, friendly and down to earth guys on the South Coast, with a shed load of talent, along with their impressive team work on and off stage. To put it bluntly, If you don’t appreciate this band, you don’t appreciate music for what it truly is. They’re also an incredible live band, so make sure you either catch them supporting InMe on 24th February, or Funeral for a Friend on 3rd August.
