Dirty Jerkers/One Man Destruction/Johnny Oregon
January 6, 2012The Winchester, Bournemouth
So to our 1st gig of 2012, this honour is bestowed to rockers “Dirty Jerkers” at The Winchester and tonight the place is packed with people after a refreshing Friday night out after the back to work from the recent festive period, along with the headlines when have two support act to entertain.
The 1st of these is Johnny Oregon who takes to the stage in a somewhat unorganised shambles, with just a snare drum and an electric guitar coupled to some electronic wizardry to entertain. The samples and looping couple with his own self written tunes soon come together showing some method within his madness, it strangely works well and seems to impress the audience with his lyrics “Can’t get a job, can’t afford a pasty a Gregg’s bakery”. After a 25 minute set of unique creativity Johnny leaves the stage to warm hearted appreciation.
Next up is Adam J Harmer’s “One Man Destruction” show, Adam is a one man band who performed with multiple instruments all at the same time, playing an electric guitar one handed along with a bass drum, hi hat and a harmonica. The blues based music radiates around the Winchester with songs such as “2000 BC” and the fast paced last number “Train Song” which generates some audience participation. This once niche style of entertainment seems to be generating some interest after the success of the likes of Seasick Steve and with Adam’s obvious potential hopefully we will seen more of him in the future.
After the two solo artists, a welcome injection of volume is supplied as the “Dirty Jerkers” take to the stage. Their energetic approach to rock gives the audience just what they have been waiting for. The twin guitars jostle for attention with some great no nonsense rock rifts delivered during the set on some of their own material such as “Gasoline” and “Hangman”. Lead singer Sam Crocker leaps down into the audience whilst still playing the guitar, sadly though lacking in any real interaction with the crowd. An interesting reworked cover of Edwyn Collins “A Girl like You” and ends the evening after a solid 45 minutes set. The band have entered themselves “Dorset Music Awards” and if want to reach the finals they will have to considerably up their game as there is some very tough competition out there. All in all a great start to the 2012 with 3 quality acts, here’s too many more.
