On The Rocks, Bournemouth
Peace Love & Gloves formed through a nucleus of Mark Mullady and Rikki Colegate, who emerged from the suburbs of Bournemouth to form the band, with drummer Jason Gordon and bass player Bradley Gillham who complete the line up. The band have been tearing through a host of venues around the town with their highly vocal band of fans who follow them at every opportunity. It is really one huge family called the ‘Gloves & Glovettes’ who go to the gigs for a huge fun night out.
Tonight ‘the family’ have a date at Bournemouth’s latest new music venue ‘On The Rocks’ perched on the cliff top over looking over the magnificent picturesque sea front and pier. Young Jack Wilkins is the first to take to the stage and it is great to see that the headline act are all stood there watching, given him their full encouragement and this gives him confidence to deliver a nice acoustic set with a great voice that really impresses. ‘Best Enemies’ from just down the road in Christchurch are next up and provide a 30 minute laid back set of acoustic guitar led numbers which takes inspiration from the worlds of metal and electronica. Guitarist Dan Mason and Paul Finch have a chemistry on stage and provide the audience with a great set of songs which shows a lots of potential for the future.
The moment comes along that all the ‘Gloves & Glovettes’ have been waiting for all week, Peace Love & Gloves take to the stage and they are on a winner before they have even played a note, as the crowd are right behind them, chanting obviously ready for a great night. The kick off with ‘Bang Bang Bang’ and every word that comes out of Marks mouth is sung right back at him by the extremely enthusiastic audience. At the moment Bournemouth for some reason is quite a difficult place to draw a crowd for live music is the various venues, to see a band bucking the trend is truly fantastic, if the band are playing well and the audience are really enjoying themselves it just makes for a great atmosphere.
There are really no obvious influence coming from the band, the four of them seem to have a whole style of their own that really could develop into mass appeal, Mark’s fast paced delivered vocals with Rikki’s simple but effective guitar provides maximum entertainment with well written lifestyle based songs such as ‘Hold On’ and ‘Ashamed of Me’.
In amongst the audience are a few of the bands extra vocalists who jump up on stage to join them for a couple of numbers and fit it really well. The set list is quite adventurous as they try three very new songs that have only been rehearsed a few times and wonderfully they work well, disappointing one of their best songs ‘Toy Story’ which could have been included as an encore was left out. The band have so far proved themselves as worthy opponents as currents kings of the Bournemouth music scene, their challenge now is to take it further to see how other towns and cities will receive them.
