iBar, Bournemouth

The Longest Day are possibly one of the best bands in Bournemouth right now and the locals are lucky enough to get to see them perform on a regular basis in and around the local area. The band’s debut album ‘A State of Indifference’ is a great indication of just what they are capable of. With the emotional lyrics and the searing melodic Muse-esque guitars, they seem to be turning a few heads within the music industry. So make sure you get the chance to see them live in these small venues while you have the chance and tonight is one of those chances as the band play a rather intimate gig at Bournemouth’s iBar.

There are 3 support bands laid on to make sure this Sunday evening is full of entertainment. The first of these is London’s Dave Giles who rather nervously takes to the stage with just his acoustic guitar, telling everyone that this is one of his first solo shows outside the capital city. The very catchy ‘Another Fine Day’ starts of the set in style. Dave’s in-between banter is a really warm and friendly and there is something making him really nervous tonight. It soon becomes apparent that he has written a song about a girl in the audience and he had travelled all the way from London to perform it for her. A declaration of love which leaves the audience feeling a little uncomfortable as it is not obvious who it is for and what her reaction was. After this Dave shakes off the early nerves and really gets into his stride with a great song about friendship called ‘Yeah Buddy’ , a short yet entertaining set. I’m sure we will be hearing more of this guy in the future.

To be honest I was not really sure what to make of 2nd support act ‘Oposium’. Their sound was something quite different that the usual Bournemouth crowd are used to. The band comprised of a drummer and just 2 keyboard players and they were quite jazzy with a rock edge. There was a few good experimental tunes which the majority of the crowd seem to enjoy.

Kasiuss’ first trip down to the south coast was in August this year where they supported Madina Lake in Poole at Chords, such was the impression to the audience they were invited back to play here tonight which is a very long way from their home town of Leeds. The band kick off their set and soon prove that the trip was worthwhile. Lead singer ‘Biz’ delivers some great vocals backed by epic piano and rocking guitar sounds. Songs such as ‘The Guardian’ and ‘Wonders Prevail’ are positively uplifting with the band soon having the crowd on their side.

The Longest Day live are something I defy any rock music fan not to get excited about, they deliver with the band giving one hundred percent effort at each performance with tonight being no different. The impressive numbers such as ‘Kamikaze Dream’ and the epically big anthem ‘Suit of Lies’ just sending shivers tingling down my spine, these songs work well in any venue weather big or small. The band’s music really takes them over when on stage and they really get into the performance with lead singer Dan Henry falling to his knees still playing his guitar with sheer exhaustion during the last number ‘Breathe More Air’. As the band finish their set there are plenty of calls for an encore, however the band just leave the stage with the crowd wanting more.
